Update on our Christmas

We hope everyone had a blessed Christmas! Ours was quite nice, albeit a little rushed to get everything squeezed into Christmas Eve and Christmas Day! Since we traveled the week prior to Christmas, I didn't get everything done prior to our travel that I would have liked. However, in the end it worked out great. We spent Christmas Eve making cookies, attending a service at church, singing Happy Birthday to Jesus with cupcakes, hunting for Rudolph in the sky with Clark, putting out milk and cookies for Santa, talking about the following day being Jesus' birthday, etc. It was a fun day filled with much anticipation from our children. When I tucked Clark into bed that night, he was giddy with excitement and told me "I am SO excited!" It was priceless. He woke up on Christmas morn asking if Santa (or Noah as he calls him at times) had come. Ali, being 12 now, is still a little "too cool" to act too excited. Ha!!

The kids had a wonderful time searching through their gifts. Ali's favorite gift was an electric guitar (what were we thinking?) and Clark's favorite was a Batman batcave. He also got a bike and was proud as he rode it around the kitchen.

After we celebrated as a family and had brunch, we headed out for our Christmas service at church. It was a nice way to turn our focus back to the true meaning of the day. After the service, we made our way to Lake Charles, LA to spend the day with my parents and brother and his family. We were able to see baby Kai again. He has grown since we last saw him at 3 1/2 lbs. as he is a little over 7 lbs. now!! What a precious little guy.

We returned Saturday afternoon from Louisiana....without our kiddos!! My parents wanted to keep them a few days since they were on break from school. I miss them...it is just too quiet around here!

We are trying to work in our 4th bedroom while the kids are away. We wanted to surprise them when they returned home with a new playroom. However, we are never going to get that room finished in time. Oh well!! We have decided to turn our guest room into a playroom for the kids (and T.C. when he wants to play Guitar Hero!!). We are taking the beds down...adding some shelves for toys...setting up Clark's drum set to go with Ali's electric guitar...etc. We still WELCOME guests as we asked for a great Comfort Zone Raised Aerobed for Christmas. It is so neat...the height of a regular bed...but portable when not in use! We thought it was the perfect solution. I think the kids will love having a space that is theirs for all the excess toys/games/movies!!

Here are some pictures from our Christmas.

Long time no post....

Well since I last posted we have traveled to and from Indiana, visit with our friends in Louisville, celebrated Ali's 12th birthday, watched Clark be an angel in the children's program at church, made our annual gingerbread house, took Ali to a Toby Mac concert, anticipate the celebration of the birth of our savior, and much more! Oh yes, we also got a little snow down here in south TX! It has been one busy December. This week I just want us to slow down and enjoy the season. (is that possible...the slowing down part?)

We just returned home Sunday from our week long trip up to Indiana and Kentucky. Traveling with 2 kids and 2 dogs definitely had its interesting moments. Ali was able to celebrate her birthday with old friends from Louisville. We had 2 parties in the same day! (she got 2 birthday cakes!!) She had the first celebration with some homeschooled friends. They had a blast making an ornament, playing out in the cold, and having pizza and homemade hot fudge ice cream cake!! (talk about yummy!) Later that evening, she also had cake and ice cream with her friends at our old church. She enjoyed her day very much!

In Indiana, the kids had some special time with their cousins Jackson and Sawyer. Clark and Jackson are only 8 months apart, so they played cars and trains until their little hearts content. All in all it was a good time.

Yesterday Ali and her best friend were able to have a little joint birthday celebration with a couple of friends. (their birthdays are only a few days apart) They went to a place called Main Event and played laser tag, inside golf, and arcade games. They had a blast.

Now I am in a mad rush to wrap gifts for my side of the family, unpack/finish laundry/and repack to go to see my family Christmas afternoon, get everything ready for our kids "Santa" visit, hopefully bake some more Christmas cookies, etc. All that said I need to get off of this computer. Heehee!!

We hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas as we reflect on the birth of our savior!

A new roof at last....

As I am typing this, our roofers are on their way! We will finally get rid of the blue tarp that has been covering our roof for 2 1/2 months now.

Though we all ate way too much, our Thanksgiving was absolutely wonderful. Our friends flew in from New Mexico, and my parents came in. We had fun cooking in the kitchen and enjoying a delicious meal.

The day after Thanksgiving, we hit the stores at 4AM........or NOT!!! I can never bring myself to do that...I breakout in a cold sweat thinking of those crowds. However, we did take our friends to Space Center Houston. We stayed all afternoon and had a great time. We took a tram tour, watched an IMAX show on becoming an astronaut, and walked the exhibits.

When our friends had to return to New Mexico, we figured it was time to start preparing our home for Christmas. I guess I am a little obsessed, I admit...but a dozen plastic tubs and 5 trees later...we are decorated. Ok, one tree is very small and in Clark's room! However, we do have 2 full sized trees downstairs, one 4ft. tree on the upstairs landing, and a 5 or 6ft. tree in Ali's room. I LOVE Christmas...the sights, sounds, smells, tastes...and especially celebrating the birth of our saviour! It just all came a little too soon it seemed this year. It doesn't seem like it should be Christmas yet. But, it is and we have to run with it. I am not quite finished with the shopping. We hope to get it finished up very soon. We leave for Indiana a week from Saturday...so I am kind of in a time crunch. We are so excited to also be able to see our friends in Louisville, since it is only an hour away from T.C.'s family!! Ali is TOOOOO excited.

Clark had school pictures taken a while back, and we were to pick out our favorite pose yesterday. Pose? Shouldn't school pictures be you get what you get. That is how it was when I was a kid...you take your ONE picture...and hope for the best. Ummm, it doesn't work like that anymore in preschool. Some (overpriced) photographer shows up and low and behold...we go in to look at the pictures...and Clark wasn't even wearing the clothes I sent him to school in. The photographer CHANGED all the kids clothes into these goofy staged photos. To say they were lame is an understatement. Here is the rundown on the photo shoot...the boys all got their pictures taken in a nerdy button down shirt (buttoned up to the top) and a sweater vest...they even combed his hair straight down like a dork...then another with a soccer jersey and ball and the final one was a NASCAR picture with a jacket and hat on. Like seriously....we don't even watch NASCAR nor does he play soccer. Ummm, hello people!!! I was thinking to myself that I sent him in a polo shirt and cute shorts for a reason. Long story short, I felt obligated to purchase a pose...get this...for $25 a SHEET!! Ugh...

We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and is enjoying the start of this blessed CHRISTmas season!

Preparations for Thanksgiving....

The time has come...I have put it off for as long as possible. (the dreaded Thanksgiving grocery trip, that is!) I love eating the Thanksgiving meal, just usually put off the shopping trip for as long as I can. However, the day has come!!

We are so excited to have friends from our Albuquerque days flying in on Wednesday. It is Ali's best friend while we lived there, and her mom. We can't wait to see them! It has been 3 years since we last saw them. My parents are also coming in tomorrow for Thanksgiving. We will hopefully have a great time visiting and making yummy foods in the kitchen. However, today is the day to finish getting the house in order and kitchen stocked. (not to mention homeschooling, orthodontics, and swim practice, etc...are there enough hours in the day?)

There hasn't been much going on lately to blog about..same old same old. The kiddos are doing well. Ali had a sinus infection last week and T.C. had the crud also. I think they are both on the mend, or at least I hope. Clark has a touch of it, but seems to be fine.

Last week we were able to have dinner with a family that just adopted a 5 1/2 year old little boy from Ukraine. They live outside of San Antonio and used the same adoption agency as we did. We were in contact with them prior to their traveling to give them tips from the "been there done that file." Their son is SO cute. They have only been home for 2-3 weeks, so he is still speaking fluent Russian. He and Clark just played and played despite the fact that they couldn't speak to each other. It was so funny, I asked Clark that night as we were putting him to bed if he and Jamie talked to each other. He said "no, we didn't talk...yes, we did...but he still talks Ukraine...like I did in Ukraine" Then I asked "well, did you understand him?" He got this funny look on his face and answered "No." Ha...I guess it at least sounded familiar. They were in town for an appointment with a doctor that specializes in internationally adopted children.

Our nephew is out of the hospital. He was able to go home since my sister in law is an RN and knows how to take care of his medicines, tube feedings, etc. What a blessing for them! Now we just continue to pray he gains weight quickly so his little heart can be repaired.

I must start my crazy day! We have much to be thankful for this year. We hope each of you takes time to give thanks to our heavenly father for all the blessings he bestows on us. I know we are thankful for our family...our precious children mean the world to us. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Watch out HGTV!

HGTV better just watch out...because my hubby made a pretty stinkin' cool wall today! We have had the idea, for about a year and a half, to turn one of our blank walls in our downstairs into a "wall of fame"...or not so fame. Anyhoo, we wanted all of our family photos in one spot. It turned out so neat. (or at least we think it did) The frames don't match, as we have just collected them through the years...but that is how we envisioned it. Just a hodgepodge of memories. Thank heavens for the engineer in the house! He had the idea to use our living room floor as the design center...he measured the wall...mapped it out on the floor...and went to town. (then just transferred them over to the wall) We are pooped now. We spent all weekend and today either shopping, putting things together, etc. etc. Let me explain...we finally made it into 2008 and broke down and bought a flat screen T.V. We are always (and I mean always) behind the times. But, we're alright with that. We don't really put much thought into buying up the latest and greatest gadget. However, the T.V. that the kids have upstairs in the 4th bedroom (for movies and PS2) is going out. It's only 17 years old...don't know what could be the problem. heehee!! So we broke down and bought a flat screen for downstairs so we could move our old one upstairs for the kids. All that said, Saturday was spent T.V. shopping. Then after we had it set up on our old shelving...we realized it looked pretty silly. Needless to say, Sunday (after church) was spent shopping for new shelves. We finally (like I said...behind the times) made it to IKEA!! That is the coolest store, and talk about HUGE! Too bad it is about 45 minutes away in downtown Houston. Well, that is probably a good thing on our wallets. Anyway, a couple of hours later we left the store with just the right shelves. Yesterday was spent putting them together (again, thanks hubby!!) and moving everything from our old shelves. So tonight we sit here totally wiped out.

Our little nephew is doing better. He is gaining weight again. Now it is just a waiting game for when he is strong enough/weighs enough for the heart surgery. We can't wait to see him again, as he is just such a precious doll baby!

Clark has been doing much better the last several days. God knew I needed some good days. He generally has such a sweet personality, and is so funny. We just have to work through the other issues.

My mind isn't working well tonight...so I will update again at another time. Wanted to post some pictures of T.C.'s handy work.

Please pray

Please join us in lifting up our little nephew, Kai, to the Lord. He was admitted into the hospital this weekend. He is in need of heart surgery for a hole in his heart that didn't close up. The doctors would like him to weigh about 10 lbs. prior to surgery, and he is currently under 5 lbs. He will remain in the hospital until surgery. Just join us as we pray for God to close the hole, and heal this precious little guy.

Other less important matters...the kids had a fun time trick or treating Friday night. They have enough candy for an army. We took Clark to a little fall festival, then we all headed out trick or treating. The 3 Musketeers (Ali, Sierra, and Lilly) wanted to trick or treat together...so they joined us.

Hi Ho Hi Ho it's off to training classes we go...for the dog that is! We hope it is a $110 well spent. Mandy the maniac is in much need of some "training," to say the least. She is one crazy, wild gal. I feel for that pet trainer next Monday when we start...GOOD LUCK!

The kids had their Christmas pictures made today. They are so cute...though I WOULD say that. I will post them when we get them back in a few weeks. I wanted to get them done early this year.

Speaking of Christmas, I can't believe the stores have their Christmas decorations out already. Like could we enjoy Thanksgiving first?

Well, here are some photos from Halloween.

I'm on my way to the loony bin....

As if there were any doubt, it's official. I need to check myself into the loony bin. WHY, you ask? Oh it has one little word written all over it...CLARK! Enough said! I just hope we all survive life with this sometimes little monster. Now that wasn't very nice, right? But it is SO how I feel today and most days lately. He is either sweet and great.......OR......not so sweet and not so great. But, we love him. Hopefully as he matures he will gain some self control over all the crying fits. Oh we can only HOPE!!

On to other things. Friday we were able to get a sneak peak at an air show that was taking place over the weekend at Ellington Field, where T.C. does his Guard duty. Since he is on orders right now, we were able to join him in watching a run through of the show. We weren't able to stay for all of it, but we enjoyed what we did see. Let me tell you, that is THE way to watch an air show. NO CROWDS!! (and free!) The Thunderbirds were there, but the kids and I didn't get to stay for that portion...as Ali had a guitar lesson. We did get to watch some old Japanese planes do a mock Pearl Harbor attack...that was pretty cool. Clark was in little boy heaven around all those planes and helicopters. He was too cute. He kept telling me that he could fly the planes and that he would wave to me. We just acted like we knew what we were doing and we walked right up to all the planes...no one ever asked us what we thought we were doing. Ha! We didn't have a good explanation, so that was good.

Saturday we decided to venture down to Galveston to check out the devastation. It was so sad. We used to just love going down there to the beach on the weekends. I don't know if it will ever truly recover. The Strand District where we would take the kids to an old fashioned ice cream and candy shop, was stripped down the sub flooring. There was absolutely NOTHING in the store...just the walls, staircase in the back, and the sub flooring. They had these great old glass candy cases...gone. I can only hope that they are in the process of renovating and hopefully were able to save some of the candy cases. We also drove through neighborhoods and there is still just piles of rubble on the sides of the road. There were piles of peoples earthly possessions, just waiting to be picked up by the garbage trucks. It was humbling, to say the very least. How often do we catch ourselves wishing we had this or that like so and so has? I mean really, and yet so many families lost everything from a storm named Ike. And so we drove back...to our comfortable life, comfortable home, perhaps changed somehow....wondering what in the world could we do to help.

Last night we had our trunk or treat at church. Clark was a puppy dog. That is a funny story in and of itself. We have friends that have a son that is in kindergarten this year. He and Clark are only about 8 or 9 months apart, but he is quite a bit larger that Clark. Clark sometimes gets a few hand me downs from Justin. The last round had a dalmatian Halloween costume in it. Do you think I would have ever put a used costume on Ali when she was that age..........of course not. I would have politely accepted the hand me down, and then turned around and bought her a brand new costume! However, child #2 comes along and I am like "heck yeah he can wear a hand me down costume...sweet!" Not that we love him any less, but money sure has to stretch farther the second time around. Just wait if we ever have a 3rd...heehee.

We were quite proud of Ali's report card for her first 9 weeks. She made all A's. As a treat today, I surprised her and took her to Red Lobster. We NEVER go, but she loves it. (though she hadn't been since we lived in Louisville) Clark was in school, and I just told her to put on her shoes and that I had a plan. She kept trying to guess where we were going. I knew she would never guess Red Lobster, I was right. We pulled into the parking lot (I was watching her in the rear view mirror), and she got the funniest look on her face. She kept saying, "I didn't do anything..why did we come here." We sat down at our table and she kept telling me, "this is so weird, I can't believe we came here." She was so excited...and ordered her favorite, shrimp scampi. She was all smiles! She even came up with a clever explanation of why kids say they are so full but yet still have room for dessert. "I have a place for my food, and it can fill up...but then there is another spot for dessert." So, she was able to order dessert and her choice was a chocolate chip lava cookie with ice cream. I have to admit, it was awesome. Needless to say, we left very full and quite happy. It was a great lunch with our sweet girl.

Today was picture day at Clark's preschool. When I went to pick him up after school, the teacher said, "Clark was such a ham at picture time...he was so funny." That was it, no explanation...and I surely didn't necessarily want to know what he did. Ha! If it was embarrassing, I didn't want to hear it out loud in front of the other moms. So...I laughed...and politely exited the room.

Here are some photos from the last several days.

Our mini vacation

So Thursday we loaded up the kids and luggage and headed to San Antonio. We just love it over there, especially the hill country. We ended up getting out of town right before rush hour, and were able to make great time. We didn't time it so well last year when we went, and it took us over an hour to get through the Houston traffic.

We spent Friday at Sea World. It was wonderful because the crowds were so low compared to last year. I am sure being a Friday helped a lot with kids in school. All of the lines were short, and we had our pick of seats for all of the shows. Believe was pretty full, but we still ended up getting pretty good seats. That is the name of the Shamu show. Clark loved all of the shows. The kids were also able to feed the dolphins this year. We got to the dolphin pool too late last year and they had closed the window where you purchase the fish. Needless to say, they were excited to be able to do that this time around. Clark is still "vertically challenged" so he wasn't tall enough to ride much. He did ride the Shamu coaster (a cute little kiddie coaster) and the log ride. He is the brave one...so once he IS tall enough, I think he will be T.C.'s roller coaster buddy! However, T.C. was determined to get his dear daughter on a coaster this time around. (she is like her mom and doesn't really like huge coasters...I am more of a Disney World roller coaster rider...ya know, the smaller ones!) He actually BRIBED her to ride a big coaster...yep, $40!!! I couldn't believe it. His price just kept going up...$20,$25,$30....He finally got her at $40. She loves money, so she finally caved in. I was shocked that she actually took him up on his offer. She was quite adamant at first about absolutely positively NOT going on a roller coaster. But she put on her semi brave face and walked off into the sunset with her dad, ready to get on the coaster...ok, really she was just ready to get her 40 bucks! However, she did it...pretty much hated it...and said she was never ever riding something like that again. Ha!! Clark, on the other hand, was quite upset that he couldn't ride with them. He was a little perturbed when they walked off without him!

Saturday was a more laid back day. We decided to check out another town right outside of San Antonio called New Braunfels. It is a small town, but home to one of the largest water parks in the country Schlitterbahn. Of course the park is closed right now, but we got to drive by and see part of it. It is supposedly among the 10 top best water parks. We ended up at Landa Park, a great city park with a little train ride going through it. They also have a great aquatic area during the summer. They have an Olympic sized pool and a HUGE spring fed pool. They blocked off part of the river and it feeds the pool. It looked like a lot of fun, and we will have to go when that section is open. The kids did feed some precious ducks and we rode the train. We also ventured into their small downtown and visited a little train museum that is in an old train station. They had a steam engine and a caboose in the back that we could climb around on. It is a little German town, so T.C. just had to eat in a German restaurant and get his schnitzel fix! After we left New Braunfels, we drove up the Guadalupe River and made our way to Canyon Lake. We had no idea that the hill country was so pretty. It was beautiful. The river is gorgeous with hills right there. It actually reminded us of driving through back roads in New Mexico or Colorado. We look forward to going in the spring/early summer so the kids can play in the river. The big thing to do around there is tubing. You just float with the current. Canyon Lake was pretty as well, and we enjoyed walked on top of the dam. We had planned on strolling around another little area called Gruene, but a huge market/craft bazaar was going on and people were everywhere with nowhere to park. So, we drove through and look forward to checking it out the next time we are there. It just a small sleepy town with neat shops. Can't wait to browse through them! With a great day behind us, we then set out to see some old friends. We have some friends from our Albuquerque days that are now stationed in San Antonio. Ali and their youngest are the same age. It was fun to see how the kids had changed in the over 6 years since we had seen them. Bryan was a single dad for some time and is now remarried. We enjoyed meeting his wife Karen. They now have 2 Great Danes! You will see in the pictures just how massive these dogs are. They are gentle giants though...which is something I didn't know. I had never been around Great Danes before. One weighs 155 lbs. and the other is 145 lbs. HUGE!! They are so sweet, as you can tell by the pictures. It was a great evening spent with old and new friends.

Sunday we parked near the Alamo, and spent quite a few hours in that area. Ali wanted to go a Ripley's Believe it or Not museum. T.C. took her across the street to that while I walked around the Alamo grounds with Clark. I was able to get him to sleep while I sat near a fountain. I browsed the Alamo store and walked around while he took a snooze! Once T.C. and Ali rejoined us, we walked along the Riverwalk and had lunch outside near the river. The weather was gorgeous. After lunch, we walked 1/2 a mile or so down to the Market Square and checked out the Mexican market. Clark got to watch some children doing Spanish dancing, and he really enjoyed that.

That is about the extent of our long weekend. We enjoyed it very much. Now I must finish wading through the laundry...I always dread that part of a trip!

Our crazy new pooch has a name at last....Mandy. Ali named her, and we think it is quite fitting. As I type this, she is running around like a mad woman. Full of energy doesn't begin to describe her. CRAZY girl!! She is sweet, but we have to watch out what she chews on...like everything in her path. Ha! Ok, she was just chasing her tail...oh wow! (and we thought she might be through the puppy stage...ummm, NO)

We want to ask you to pray for a couple of things. Our little miracle of a nephew, Kai, is fighting an infection. He is on antibiotics, but I didn't get an update yesterday...so I don't know much. My mom said he seemed to be more comfortable as of Saturday. We just hope God heals the infection, and he will continue to progress very well. Another is a decision we are having to make regarding T.C.'s job. He was approached a couple of weeks ago by NASA to interview for a government job. He did, and was called yesterday with a job offer. We are praying about it, and trying to make the best decision. The civil service job offers more job security...but as a contractor you make more money in the long run...but you can also loose the contract. So, we are leaning more toward job security, especially in today's uncertain economy. We are truly so thankful for his job.

Here are so photos from our trip.

Our family has grown again...this time it has fur!

Oh dear heavens, what in the world were we thinking? Maybe we weren't...that's the problem. We made our usual stop to Taco Cabana for lunch after church on Sunday. So far so good...then we decided to go to Petco to get dog/cat food on our way home. We never should have done that...LOL! We went in for pet food, and came out with a 4 legged friend. Actually the kids and I have been looking at her for several months now. Every Sunday at our Petco they have pet adoptions from a local shelter. We spotted her and her sister this summer. However, T.C. was pretty adamant about NO MORE DOGS! I agree, we never really wanted 2 dogs in the house. However, our sweet little Timmy is 14 years old now. It goes without saying that we aren't sure how much longer he will be around. He is doing pretty well, but 14 is 14! Anyway, I thought it would be good for the kids if we had another pooch when Timmy started to go downhill. T.C. didn't seem to share my thoughts. So, we were minding our own business on Sunday walking into Petco....then I made the mistake of looking over at the adoption area. There she was.........the pup from the summer! Her sister was adopted a couple of weeks ago. I just HAD to walk over and give her a little pet...then T.C. walked over. I could tell that he thought she was pretty cute...and ya know what happened a minute later...he said "I don't care if you get her...she IS pretty cute." Ha!! Of course Ali had an absolute fit. Needless to say, we now officially have a ZOO! As if we needed another dog to prove that. So...now we keep asking ourselves "WHAT WERE WE THINKING?" She was named Xaria by the lady that has been fostering her since she was only weeks old. As of now, she is nameless...poor baby. We are still calling her Xaria, Xara, or Xar...but not sure if we will keep that...it is a little strange. She is about 7 months old, black with a little white, wire haired, terrier mix. A sweet little mutt that is very skittish right now. She is good with the kids though (so far).

We had a fun weekend. We took the kids to the Houston Children's Museum downtown. Clark had more fun than Ali, as expected. She did enjoy some of the exhibits. Clark LOVED it though. There is a neat Mexican town area that he absolutely could have spent all day in. It has little mock stores, kitchen, school, etc. He was very cute to watch.

This coming weekend, we are packing up and heading to San Antonio...just for the weekend, that is. It will be our annual (ok, it can't really be annual yet since we just started this last year) trip to Sea World. Military families get in free once a year through their "Hero Salute" program. Free....we LOVE free! We are excited to have a change of scenery. There are a lot of fun things to do in San Antonio. That is where we went on our first little family trip with Clark. We went last year just a few weeks after returning from Ukraine. He has changed so much since then.

I forgot to mention that last week I made a flying trip to Lake Charles with the kids to see our little nephew, Kai. We had not seen him yet. He is just too cute. I will post pictures when all of my sister in law's family has seen him. I wasn't able to hold him, as he is only 3 1/2 lbs. or so and still can't be out of the isolette much. Ali was allowed into the NICU to see him also. He is just precious...such a miracle.

Here are some pictures from our weekend and our new furry addition.

Kneeling, praying.........and KISSING?

Like the cheesy night shows on the radio..."crying, lovin', and leavin'" or some version of that....well, we have our own version "kneeling, praying, and kissing." Let me explain for a moment. During Wednesday night worship at our church, we usually sit right behind our associate pastor's wife and their 5 year old twin girls. For several weeks now, Clark has been sitting with the girls. (since we are right behind in the next pew) She is also taking the "Parenting in the Pew" class on Sunday mornings, so we are all trying to teach our children how to worship without the need for crayons, toys, etc. So last night she was trying to have the children follow along during the liturgy, etc. Prayer time rolls around and she had the children pull out the kneeling bench and they were all kneeling, hands folded, heads bowed......then it happened. One of the twins puts her arm around Clark....and that was all it took! Clark leans over and kisses her on the shoulder...then leans over and kisses the other one on the cheek. Back and forth until he had kissed each several times. We finally had to break up the kiss fest that was going on. We were all laughing (silently, of course...it WAS prayer time). I laughingly apologized to their mom after church and she said "well, you didn't see the girls trying to fight him off...did you?" Ha!!

So I just thought you might like a glimpse into our lives...it's always something with Mr. Clark!

Here is another funny scenario that went down on our way home from church. (Clark had an empty styrofoam cup in his car seat cup holder...we heard crushing noise coming from the backseat)
me: Clark, did you just crush that cup?
Clark: umm, no
T.C. and I both: you must have...did you...we heard it
Clark: no
(Ali decides to investigate herself and leans over and inspects the cup)
Ali: yes you did...you poked a hole in it
Clark: well, I didn't mean to
T.C. and I: that is lying...even if you didn't mean to, you need to tell the truth...please don't lie to us
Clark: FINE!!!!!
(ok, so his final response was like a total teenager...FINE!...where does this 4 year old get this stuff?)

Austin and back again....

We left Friday late afternoon to head to Austin for the weekend. Ali's good friend, Sierra, joined us. Her parents weren't going to Austin, so she went with us. She wanted to swim in the meet also.

Saturday morning we headed out to the UT pool so that the girls could warm up. We were so surprised at how nice the natatorium was! They must have a great team there at the university. I know Michael Phelps set records there, as did Aaron Peirsol. Ali thought that was very cool. As most young swimmers think Michael Phelps is the the coolest thing since sliced bread these days. Ha! You can even buy swim caps with Michael Phelps name on them. In Ali's words, "that is too cool." Ummm, if you say so.

Ali improved all of her times this weekend. (we aren't headed to the Olympics...but she is at least improving!) In T.C.'s words, "I think we need to be focusing on academic scholarships..." Hahaha! But, in her defense...she has only be at this swimming gig for a little over a year now. She has a LOT of arms and legs to learn to maneuver, once she gets that down pat...her height will be to her advantage. They say slow and steady wins the race...just not in swimming. I'm kidding, we were proud of her! At this age, she is much more interested in her social life in between each event. (she can talk A LOT!) Ha! She loved swimming in such a nice pool...she wishes there were meets there more often. However, our wallets do not.

We took the kids to the TX State Capitol and museum after the meet on Saturday. We took a tour of the capitol and then went to the museum in another building. It is beautiful. The kids really enjoyed the museum, so much so that they wanted to go back for a few minutes on Sunday....so we did.

Well, the bat viewing ended up being a total flop. In great Judd fashion...we showed up....waited for an hour (with hundreds of other people)...we waited...and waited...just knowing the wait would all be worth it. So an hour later, after we had only seen MAYBE 20 bats total...we decided to leave. (along with everyone else!) We gave it the ole' college try! The kids enjoyed it though. It was right on the river, and we were able to watch a great fireworks display right across from where we were. Let me back up, as I can't remember if I mentioned this in my last post. During the summer, you can watch thousands of bats fly out from underneath a bridge on the river. We were a little late in the season, but sometimes you are lucky enough to catch quite a few flying around. (we were not...haha) You can read about it at this site http://www.batcon.org/home/index.asp?idPage=122

We are in the middle of shampooing our carpets...so I better get downstairs and help! Enjoy some pictures from our weekend.

Why can't parenting be easy?

There isn't much news around here. The insurance adjuster came on Sunday, but it might be a while before we actually see any money. The wait is the aggravating part. We aren't even sure how much they are going to give us for everything. We do know they are going to cover a new roof, and probably pay for new carpet in the rooms affected (which leaves the other rooms with carpet that is 6 years old...can't exactly do that), a small portion for our fence (they depreciate the value for the age of the fence and because we share it with 3 neighbors...well, we won't get much at all for that, etc. It is all such a pain. T.C. contacted a man that we met through the summer swim team that owns his own home construction business. He has connections...so he is going to share a good roofer with us and also a guy that does small inside construction jobs to put new sheet rock on one of Ali's walls. Hopefully he can nail down the carpeting that we ripped up. We are thankful all of the carpeting dried without much of a stain. There is a big spot in the living room, but we are going to rent a carpet shampooer and see if we can clean them up. If we can't, we will then try getting it professionally cleaned. We are really trying not to have to recarpet the house right now. Not an expense that we are prepared for.

I am drained these days...just going to be brutally honest here. Clark is testing my patience...and my patience is gone out of the window. Unfortunately!! He is our major whiny pants. We didn't really have that with Ali, so I am at a loss. They have totally different personalities. We believe in first time obedience with our children...not 4th or 5th time obedience. Clark...oh Clark would rather do it until he knows you are coming after him. That drives me absolutely crazy. I am really trying to focus on that right now...it isn't going very well. There are lots of time-outs, crying episodes, drama, spankings, and on and on and on. I haven't found that perfect solution, though I know there really is no such thing....just a good solution would suffice! Being a parent is the toughest job out there. Just when you begin to think you have it figured out, the kids go and throw you a curve ball. I have read it all Shepherding a Child's Heart, Growing Kids God's Way, and the one I am reading now is Creative Correction by Lisa Whelchel. It has great tools to use...trying to incorporate a chart where he gets smiley faces if he does certain things and sad faces for unacceptable behavior. Can't tell you if it's working yet, will let you know.

What books/Bible studies are you reading/doing right now? In my Mom 2 Mom Bible study we are reading A Woman After God's Own Heart by Elizabeth George. We are reading the book and doing the study guide that goes along with it. It is a fabulous book. I read it several years ago and was thrilled to take the study and read the book again. It addresses so many areas in a woman's life...being a Godly wife, mother, and mainly just a woman that follows God with all that she is. We are also taking a study during the Sunday School hour using the book Parenting in the Pew. I also read this book several years ago, and was so excited that our pastor's wife was going to be teaching through the book. It is fabulous for those out there that struggle with teaching your children how to truly learn to worship...not just sitting still in church...but truly teaching them what it means to worship God. It talks about how as parents we are concerned with what those around us are thinking about our kids and how they "act" during church. It focuses on how we need to think less about those around us and focus on our heart during worship, so that our children see and learn through us. WOW!! It gives ways to help guide our children through the worship service...reminding them of things throughout the week that could somehow relate to the message, etc. It is a great read!

Here are a few pictures from the last week or so.

Finally up and running!!

Yippy skippy....our cable returned yesterday afternoon! That means we now have our t.v., internet, and home phone. I am so happy about that. I shouldn't complain, we have friends that are still without power. I am sure she wanted to smack me when I complained about cable....she would settle for some AC and lights!

For those that haven't lived in a hurricane prone area....here is a little highlight. After power is restored to SOME gas stations, the lines are way down the street to get gas....for days. Station will run out of gas and have to shut down until they can be refilled. Grocery stores (the ones that have power) only sell non-perishable foods due to loosing all frozen foods and dairy from the loss of power. It was impossible to find milk for days. I, thankfully, brought some back from Louisiana with us. I also grocery shopped in Louisiana before returning home. We were thankful to have plenty of food.

Needless to say, we are so glad that life is returning to a more normal state. The insurance adjuster is coming by on Sunday for his walk through. We are anxious to see what exactly they are going to do.

Clark had his post op appointment yesterday. He has healed fine from his adenoidectomy. The ENT wrote a referral for speech therapy. He said because of the enlarged adenoids, he compensated by incorrectly learning some sounds. He seems to think that it will not take many sessions, and that we will learn exercises to do at home.

As of tomorrow, our weeks will be back to normal. Clark started back to preschool on Wed., gymnastics today, and Ali resumes guitar lessons and swim team tomorrow. She will be swimming as much as possible this next week. She will be participating in her first out of town swim meet next weekend in Austin at UT. (and has been out of swimming for over 2 weeks with the storm)

Well, no pictures to post tonight...hopefully this weekend.

Comcast....where are you?

We found free internet (for an hour) at a McDonald's near our house. YIPPY! We are still waiting (rather impatiently) for cable, internet, and our home phone to begin working again. We aren't sure when that will happen.

The roof was finally tarped yesterday, three days AFTER it was supposed to be done. AARRGH! But, it is done now. We aren't sure how long it will take for things to be repaired. The insurance inspectors have not given us an appointment for their walk through as of yet. Aaaahhhh, so again we learn a lesson in patience. (I don't like those...do you?)

It is almost business as usual around here. Clark will start back to preschool on Wed. I don't know about his gymnastics...and Ali's swim team is waiting on the green light from the city pool. Hopefully everything will be up and running sometime this week.

T.C. went back to his job today for the first time. He has been on orders with the National Guard since last Monday. He would like a day off...that is for sure. But, we are thankful for his job and work!

Well, will make this make this short for now. Hopefully I will be doing this from the comfort of our own home very soon!

Where in the world are the tarp people?

Well, as luck would have it...the tarp people were supposed to be at our house between 7am-7pm today to tarp the roof. Well, we left the house at 6pm to come and search for WIFI somewhere and they STILL weren't there yet. Ugh. Wonder if we will be pleasantly surprised when we get home and have a blue tarped roof? We aren't holding our breath.

We still don't have our cable service...so therefore no internet or phone either. Bummer. But, we are thankful for power. We talked to some friends at church last night that are still without power. So...we are at McDonald's right now PAYING for WIFI, something we said we would never do..haha! We won't be doing this often.

Our little nephew is doing great, from what we hear. A tiny little squirt, but we are hearing he is quite cute. I will definitely post pictures when I have some. I haven't even seen a picture of him as of yet.

It was strange driving back to our home for the first time since old Ike hit. It looked a little like a war zone. Pretty much our entire neighborhood lost their fences. A little weird seeing into everyone's backyards. They mostly have roof damage as well. The roofing companies are going to be very busy around here. We don't have a clue how long the wait will be for our insurance to be taken care of....weeks, months?

The kids have been troopers through it all...pack up...rush off to grandparents...worry about their dad being in the middle of the storm...wait a few days....pack up and rush back home to a damaged neighborhood. We have tried to stress to them just how fortunate we are.

I will run...need to get the kids home.

Then there was light......

Got a call from T.C. last night about our power finally being back on. YIPPY! The kids and I are returning home today. I don't believe we have cable or internet yet...so this may be it for a while. I have a million loads of laundry to do, and probably some clean up.

We do have great news though...my brother and his wife welcomed their son into the world last night. He was itty bitty at 2.4 lbs. and 14.? inches long. His name is Wyeth Kai and we can't wait to meet him.

Still hanging in there...

Well, we are days 2 post hurricane...and T.C. is going stir crazy. He had an extremely hectic morning as he awoke to a horrible rain storm (which wasn't exactly what he needed with an already leaky roof!). Needless to say, he spent all morning placing/emptying/replacing bowls all over the upstairs. There are multiple spots that are leaking through from our attic. I think he said there is even a place on Ali's wall that was wet. We don't know what all will have to be done when it comes to the repairs. He also said we lost one of our shutters to an upstairs bedroom window and it hit his car on the way down...think he has some scratches. (just icing on the proverbial cake) We are still thankful and blessed as we know it could have been much worse. We dread the clean up...shampooing carpets, repairs, painting, bleaching...

On a positive note, a company hired by our insurance company is coming by on Tuesday afternoon to tarp the roof. We are very glad about this. T.C. has used every towel in the house with leaks...with no way to wash/dry them. Like T.C. said...it will look like a big tent. Ha! Anyone that has been through a hurricane knows the blue tarps!!

We still don't know when we will have power. T.C. said an area near our house got power today...so we are hopeful. We would like to all be together again.

I will update when there is other news.

Safe from Hurricane Ike...

We are all safe and very thankful today. The children and I evacuated Thursday to family in Louisiana. T.C. stayed behind to care for our house. I was a nervous wreck last night...all night. Here in Louisiana we got more wind than I have probably ever endured. It literally whipped all night. I couldn't get in touch with T.C. until this morning...I was beside myself. He lost power at home, of course, and is limited to what battery is left on his cell phone. Once his cell runs out of battery, we will not have any way to communicate. As of now, we aren't sure how long we will be without power at home. We lost power here last night, but regained it around noon. We were quite thankful. As for damage...as of a few hours ago we had lost a lot of shingles from the roof, rain blew in our attic and has caused about 10 damp spots on ceilings throughout the house, and we lost a lot of our backyard fence. That is all I know of right now. I went ahead and called our insurance company and got a claims number. We will see. Just thought I would give what limited info that I have.

Going on a boat.......

A glimpse into my day....
I was cooking dinner the other night when Clark came into the kitchen with a sock cap, gloves, and cowboy boots on (on the wrong feet)...and dragging a suitcase. I chuckled and asked him why he needed a hat and gloves on. I mentioned that it was hot outside and he surely didn't need those. He looked up at me quite seriously and said "I need it, I am going on a boat...and the space shuttle...I be cold" Well, okie dokie then little mister. Can you tell his dad works for NASA? (what 4 year old normally says he is going up on the space shuttle..heehee)

Our little man had his first day of Mother's Day Out on Monday, then again today. He seems to really be enjoying it. I haven't gotten all that much out of him except that they had church (chapel) Monday, a man played the guitar, they played, and colored. He is eating like a monster. Both days I packed what I thought was too much food...and his lunch box came home empty. This is funny...Clark was telling me that he didn't want me to leave him at school on Monday. So, I walked him into his room and stayed a minute. He again told me "don't leave me Mama"...then two seconds later he said "bye-bye Mama." (I am pretty sure he was thinking "don't let the door hit ya on the way out...") Ha! The teacher was rolling.

Ali has her first middle school Bible study tonight at church. She is nervous. It is for 6-8th graders.

Ike is looming out in the gulf, unfortunately. So, we are watching in anticipation. We hope it doesn't head straight for us. We are just praying for God to calm the storm!

Here are a few pictures of Clark on Monday and a few others.

Grateful....

Grateful doesn't begin to explain how I felt after Clark's surgery was completed. The mention of putting one of my children under general anesthesia sends my mommy stress level over the top. When they wheel your child away on a hospital bed, even for a routine minor surgery, there is always the possibility of complications. It is the constant balance of knowing that God loves our children even more than we can comprehend and just being a parent that loves them so deeply it hurts. I breathed a sigh of relief when Clark's doctor came into the waiting room to tell us we could go back to recovery and be with Clark. We walked into the recovery room and two kind nurses were taking care of him as he was waking up. I was so impressed that one nurse was even cradling him in her arms as she put it "so that he didn't have to wake up alone in a hospital bed." Isn't that great? I just loved that. She then placed him into my arms so that he would wake up with me. He was so sad waking up...whimpering in pain. His little body just doesn't handle anesthesia very well. He wakes up very slowly, and it really upsets his stomach. Unlike his prior surgery, he actually made it home before he got sick this time. Woohoo!! He had an upset stomach all afternoon, but felt better by the evening. The doctor said that surgery went well, and that his adenoids were quite enlarged and were into his nasal cavity. Please pray with us that this eliminates his need for speech therapy. Another prayer would be for his little stomach. He has had some issues for almost a week now with stomach aches, etc.

As I was able to cradle our son while he came out from under the anesthesia, I was so thankful for the gift God has given us in this little fellow. We waited a very long time, traveled half way around the world, and anticipated him more than just about anything...ever!! Ali and Clark are our treasures on earth and I am so proud to be their mother. God wants to cradle us also, doesn't he? To protect us and hold us so that we are not alone. The love I have for our children is just a sliver of the love God has for us, his children. That is incomprehensible to me...but comforting at the same time.

We are trying to post a picture everyday on the new link T.C. added over on the side. It has been fun capturing a photo that sums up our day. He even added a funny quote last night...pop over there and check it out. It really was hilarious. I will give a little background. I came downstairs yesterday and find Clark and Timmy happily in the dining room.....Clark with a big grin on his face. Ummm, not always a good sign..ha! Clark happily tells me that he fed Timmy out of Happy's bowl. Meaning, he fed Timmy the rest of Happy's food. Ok, we had to have the "Timmy only needs to eat the food that we give him in the morning and at night..ok...do you understand...that food is there for Happy..." Then last night we were coming home from our small group Bible study at church and Clark proudly admits that he, too, snacked on Happy's food. Ok, GROSS! Then that was followed up by the quote on our other site. Oh bother....God truly knew parents of boys needed a good sense of humor! Clark never ceases to keep us laughing.

However, laughing is NOT what I was doing at Old Navy yesterday morning. I was so excited...I received a postcard in the mail about a great sale that O.N. was having. I have been waiting for days for the sale to start. Since I am a stay at home mom, I try to watch for sales when buying the kids clothes. So great sales really make me happy!!! (some of you are probably thinking...this gal really needs to get our more..haha!!) However, none the less...we made our trip out to Old Navy. Clark needed some clothes for church, his pants from last year are getting a little short. Anyway, I grab a bag and start shoving in 2 sizes of each (didn't know if he could keep up a size 4 yet.....by the way, he can't) and made our way to the dressing room. Moms of young kids, can you feel my pain? Put it this way, Ali was waiting outside the dressing room when we finally emerged with these words "that took a LONG time." I wanted to respond with a big "you don't know the half of it..", but I didn't. It was like wrangling a wild animal on caffeine. We were given the large handicapped dressing room since I had his stroller, which was nice. However, every stitch of clothing I would finally get on him, he HAD to see in the mirror. So with every shirt or pants, he would hop off the bench and run over to the mirror...make his comments...until I convinced him to return to the bench. Wew! When all was said and done he got some new clothes at great prices (which I always love!). Today is Ali's day...we will hit an outlet store where we usually find her clothes. She didn't like anything at Old Navy. To say she is a picky clothes shopper is an understatement. Wish me luck. T.C. has guard duty this weekend...I am sure he is glad he is there and not shopping! Heehee!!

I will be posting Clark's first day of preschool pictures on Monday. (sniff, sniff) I am sure it will be way too quiet around here while he is gone! I hope he loves it and has a great time though. Have a good weekend.

We survived Gustav....

Ok, honestly survived is a strong word...we actually didn't even get a drop of rain. We couldn't believe that! At one point we thought we might get hammered...but not so. However, we are definitely NOT complaining. My parents and my brother's family ended up not coming here at the last minute. My parents ended up going to a town where they actually sat through the eye of the storm. However, the house had a generator so they had power when everyone else didn't.

T.C.'s mom came in on Saturday evening, so we have been enjoying spending some time with her. She left this morning. We drove down to Galveston Beach one day to see the waves from the hurricane...the water was pretty rough with plenty of not so smart people way out in the water. Ali received a sewing machine for Christmas that she had not used yet. She and Mimi spend quite a while learning how to use the machine. She sews great, so she was able to help Ali a lot. Ali made a blanket for her cousin, Kai, when he is born (due in Nov.). It turned out cute...but she isn't quite finished with it yet. She is also going to make one out of the same fabric for Clark.

Clark will have his surgery tomorrow. He has to be at the surgery center at 10:00 in the morning. That is later than I was expecting, so he is going to be one hungry boy! (he can't have anything after midnight) However, he is excited about starting children's choir and hand bells tonight at church. Wish I could be a fly on the wall.

Here are a few pictures from the last few days......

A Daily Dose...

Everybody really should have at least two blogs, right? OK, not really. We had the hairbrained idea the other night to start posting one picture, funny quote, etc. that pretty muched summed up our day. In order to not clutter up this blog, we started a micro-blog, titled Наша Пригода...щоденний (which means, "Our Adventure...Daily"). Our aim is to post something everyday, but we'll see how long our faithfulness holds out.

We've linked to our daily blog above and also on the Links section in our sidebar. Enjoy!

P.S.--In case you've been completely out of touch with the weather in the Southeast U.S., Hurricane Gustav is bearing down on the Gulf Coast. Much of Southwestern LA has begun evacuating, to our house, now dubbed Chateau Gustav or Hurricane Barracks--just kidding, it's only Rachel's family plus my mom on an ill-timed pleasure trip. All that to say we may not be posting for several days because a) it's going to be busy around here and b) we might end up evacuating ourselves, depending on the course of the storm.

Clark's new look.......

This week brought a new look for Clark....his glasses. We aren't having any problems at all with him keeping them on. He learned pretty quickly that he can see much better with them on. The first day he tried taking them off a few times (he thought his plastic horse needed to wear them, etc.), but he is doing great now. He looks pretty cute...I must admit.

We had a couple of playdates with friends that are starting back to school this week. The schools around here start tomorrow (Monday), so Ali will miss getting together with her friends now that the summer is officially over. She has been on a two week break from swimming, so it is back to the grind with that this week.

Clark starts a new gymnastics class this week. The gym where he has been taking closed its doors...so we have been in search of a new one. We finally found one this past week. I think he will really enjoy the new class. He starts preschool in two weeks, on Sept. 8th. I know he will just love it.

After we returned home from Ukraine last summer, we became a reference family for our agency. We have been contacted about a dozen times over the last month from families wanting to hear our story. We are so happy that adoptions in Ukraine are still going well. One family contacted us this past week, and we found out that they lived in Texas also. They were going to be in Houston for an appointment on Friday, so we decided to get together on Saturday. They came by the house, and we were able to share our story and answer all of their questions. It was so neat. I know how many questions we had before we traveled, and we were so glad to be able to hopefully help them. They travel in Sept., and we can't wait to hear how their process goes!

T.C.'s mom is coming for a little visit this coming Saturday. The kids are so excited. We haven't seen her since the first of February, so it has been quite a while. We will enjoy having her here.

Well, I will close with a silly picture of Clark. I was trying to get some cute glasses pictures the other day, and I caught this picture without knowing he made that face at the last second. Silly kid!

Not much news around here.........

Hello blog friends...not much news around here. Ali and I are getting used to being back in school. Things are going pretty well thus far. She is going to have a lot of work in science this year with a bug collection, leaf collection, and a science research project. She wants to do her project on how food affects your swimming ability (that could go for any athlete, really). She wants to know how sugar/protein/carbs, etc. all affect the athletes body. I think it will be very beneficial for her to learn about that.

We found out this week that Clark needs glasses. He is farsighted and has an astigmatism. We picked out little metal frames....pretty cute in a nerdy sort of way. Ha! Don't tell him that...he thinks he looked great. He asks everyday where his glasses are. He doesn't understand that they had to be ordered. We hope this takes care of the problems he has been having. It was really funny, he was trying on frames and at one point he looked at me and VERY loudly said "HEY BABY!!" I laughed so hard. Believe it or not he loved trying on all the frames. He needed one of the smallest ones they had.

Clark learned how to pedal his tricycle finally. Well, actually his legs haven't been long enough to reach the pedals...but they are now! He did the most clever thing in his room the other day. He can't reach his light switch and usually drags over his rocking horse to stand on (yes, real safe!!). Anyway, he was playing with his kitchen and discovered that his ladle can have multiple uses. He uses the hooked end to hook the switch and turn it off and on. I was impressed.

Ali has been in the process of trying to update her bedroom. We found bedding on a great sale at JC Penney's the other day. She worked yesterday to pack away all of her American Girl doll and clothing (sniff, sniff). We found a cute chair at Target..again, on sale!! It looks so cute in there. She wants new artwork for the walls...but must wait until Christmas for that. It is an ocean theme. (ummmm, yes...like our whole house)

So anyway, think of us this week as we are trying to keep glasses on a little wild 4 year old boy! His surgery was moved to Sept. 4th as the doctor is going to be out of town on the 2nd.

this and that...

Back to school....and already a field trip

Ali and I had our first full week of school. We took a "field trip" on Thursday, and headed to Brazos Bend State Park to attend a children's program. One of Ali's friends from swimming, Lilly, joined us also. They started out by taking a nature walk on one of the many trails in the park. They were learning about the animal food chain, etc. After our HOT walk, we headed into the visitors center for some book reading and craft. The kids seemed to enjoy it. We then headed to a playground for a picnic. A funny thing happened during lunch. I began throwing little pieces of our food to a squirrel that was checking us out. He had obviously been fed a million times before. I turned my back to take pictures of the kids, and Mr. Squirrel climbed onto our table and tried to steal some of our food bags. Ha!

Not much news around here. Seems we have and will remain busy with doctor, dentist, and pre-op appointments. Clark is having his adenoids removed on Sept. 2nd. They said it would be beneficial for him to have them removed. We are hopeful that this will greatly help his nasal speech. He is also having some type of trouble with his eyes. He will be seeing a pediatric opthamologist next week. When he watches t.v. or looks at books...his eyes really bother him. We are anxious to see what is going on.

Well, to our dismay... our little girl (ok, not so little....)is moving up to the middle school group at church. How did that happen? Anyway, our church offers a 3 year confirmation program during the Sunday School hour, that she will begin in Sept. Sixth grade students study Old Testament, 7th grade is New Testament, and 8th grade is Luther's Small Catechism. I believe it entails quite a bit of work...but we know it will be so good for her.

Clark is moving out of his toddler bed, and into his big boy bed. Not that he doesn't fit in the toddler bed anymore...truth be known, he would probably fit in that bed several more years! However, he would have more play room in his bedroom if that toddler bed was out of there. His bedding is so cute....it is a beachy, surf board theme. Yes, we LOVE the ocean around here.

Have a great week.

Our little family celebration

Well, Thursday was Clark's Happy Adoption Day (like I mentioned in a previous post). We had a great day celebrating his one year home. The kids and I started our morning off with a stop to Shipley Donuts for a kolache. After we had our bite to eat, we went to Challenger Park for a couple of hours of playtime. It is a very nice park with a nature trail and a great playground. They had a blast. When Clark was nice and worn out, we headed home for good ole' nap time. That evening we celebrated with a nice dinner on the water. The restaurant is called Clifton By The Sea and it has a great view of the water. We like to get their crab-burgers because they are OH SO YUMMY!! The children each got a little gift in honor of their special day...we can't forget Ali waited 10 long years to become a big sister. We ended our fun day by all gathering around our computer and watching our video clips from our trip to Ukraine. It was a lot of fun reminiscing about our time in Ukraine and how much Clark has changed. All in all we had a wonderful day of celebration.

We found out yesterday that Clark might need his adenoids removed. The ENT doctor was out of the office, but his PA looked at his x-ray from last week and said his adenoids were enlarged. I am waiting to hear back from the doctor hopefully by the first of the week. The PA said he would benefit from having them removed. We will see. I still need to talk to the doctor and make sure this would actually benefit his speech.

Have a great weekend. T.C. has National Guard duty...we are just hanging out around here.

Happy Adoption Day!

Happy Adoption Day our sweet Clark!

*Update*
I forgot to add some Clark "funnies" to my post the other day. Ali and I were petting our cat, Angel, the other day and Clark walks up and says "Angel is sooooo prettiful"...it took us a minute to realize he meant beautiful. Isn't that cute? The other night at dinner we were clowning around and I was telling Clark something and he told me "you are driving me crazy"....wonder where in the world he heard that? Hummm! His favorite song these days is "I like to move it move it I like to move it..." He will sing his heart out!

Has everyone enjoyed their summer? It is flying by incredibly fast here. I can't believe it is the end of July already. (and Ali can't believe school is about to start back) We have enjoyed our summer very much. This weekend was spent shopping for new cell phones, after a little mishap at swimming yesterday. It seems Ali "misplaced" my cell phone at swim practice yesterday morning. I sometimes send her to practice with my phone so that she can call if they get out of practice early. However, it didn't make it home this time. We went back in search of it, but it had vanished. Soooo....out phone shopping we did go. Thank goodness we were actually eligible for upgrades. It was just a bummer because I lost all of my phone numbers. So that is what I spent too long last night doing...programing my new phone. Then, the rest of the afternoon we spent in search of the perfect mattress. Aaahhh....ours is shot and we have put it off for far too long. Ok people....I will just say that there are WAY TOO many mattress choices out there. Eeek! Was that just about enough boring information for you?

On to other things...like our upcoming Happy Adoption Day! I have been reminiscing quite a bit the last few weeks. I can't believe a year has come and gone since our adoption became final. It seems impossible. We waited what felt like an eternity to bring Clark home, now a year has passed. We have been trying to get him excited about his big day coming up on Friday. We were telling him the other night before bed time about it and he was getting so giddy with excitement, though we know he doesn't fully understand it. When we were explaining he had been part of our family for a year he proudly announced, "UKRAINE"...yes our son, that is where it all began. One year ago I knew that I would love our son completely, I was pretty sure I would feel the same way about him that I feel for Ali...surely biology didn't matter, right? But now I know with confidence that I do love him completely and biology DOES NOT matter. He is our son, that is all that matters. Love is not bound by the blood that runs through our veins. Adoption is very much a miracle gift given to us by God. How far has our son come in a year? Wow, he is such a resilient little guy. He left his home country, the only place he had ever known, to be part of a family. He waved good-bye to the children he had grown up with, and the caregivers that had given of themselves to care for him. He proudly left the orphanage, and ran to our waiting taxi...ready for his new life. It was as though God had prepared his heart for just that moment in time. He excitedly loaded our plane in Kiev, Ukraine bound for a new land. He overcame food issues, a new language, new faces, having freedom and choices for the first time, and most importantly he was introduced to our Father in Heaven. He is learning about his Savior, someone he had more than likely never heard about. How beautiful that is to be an eyewitness to. He learned his first Bible verse this past week. A soft answer turns away wrath. Proverbs 15:1. God is so good. Does he have a ways to go? Absolutely. He still needs reassurance in areas, he is still very much a creature of a schedule, still likes to eat a little too much, he is by nature a whiny boy, still needs a little warning on changes, etc. But those things are so minor when compared to the big picture. He doesn't seem interested in learning colors and shapes....he honestly doesn't care if it is red, green, purple, a triangle, or the number 20. He wonders why in the world that is of importance. It will all come in time...I am confident. Though he has managed to memorize a lot of "The Lord's Prayer" and recites it with us in church every Sunday morning. I feel certain that is more important anyway. He is just on his own timetable. So would we do it again.....in a heartbeat! In fact, I am ready to adopt again. So if someone were to drop a large chunk of change in our laps any time soon.....Ukraine, here we come!! Heehee...but since that is not likely to happen...we will wait to see what the Lord leads us to do.

I sat in worship this morning with my arm around our precious daughter, and our sweet son on the other side playing with a couple of Hot Wheels. I thought to myself "how blessed am I." Thank you Lord. The pastor pointed us to the cross of Christ and how nothing in this life is for certain except for that. Only our eternity through the cross is certain. Things in this life will disappoint us, but we have confidence in the cross. What a great reminder.

Then.....and now!

Our weekend getaway......

In true Judd fashion what started out to be a nice, romantic weekend.....ended up with me at the urgent care center getting a steroid injection and prescription for yet MORE steroids. YEP!! Oh well...better luck to us next time! Ha!

My parents came into town on Friday so that T.C. and I could head up to downtown Houston for the National Guard marriage enrichment seminar (that he was helping teach). Started out great...met the other chaplain wives...yada yada yada...have our Friday evening session, head to bed....only to wake up with an allergic reaction to something which resulted in HIVES!! Yes, I was pretty much miserable...but thank goodness the hotel shop carried Benadryl. I made it through the Saturday sessions (which lasted from 8am-4pm)...albeit a little drowsy from the medicine. Well, we had a nice romantic evening planned beginning with a nice dinner downtown. But in all actuality we ended up going on a group date with the other chaplains and their wives and ended with me crashing in our bed from taking 2 Benadryl. Yeah, not the weekend we had anticipated. Well, the Benadryl kept me fairly comfortable until 5am...made it through our morning sessions and headed back home...T.C. put the pedal to the medal and got me to the urgent care center. Doc said "yep, you had an allergic reaction...we don't know what caused it...but I have what it takes to fix it"...I said "do what you have to do!!" So in walks the nurse with the steroid shot...informs me that it has to go into the muscle in my hip...but fails to inform me that the intense pain afterwards would cause me to about pass out. THANKS!! But here I am 4 hours later SOOOOOOO glad I went to the doctor, despite the pain. My itching has subsided quite a bit. YIPPY! Now I have to take 5 days worth of oral steroids. I am so thankful for the relief...it was beginning to scare me a little as I was having some joint swelling, etc. Still not sure what caused it, didn't eat anything out of the ordinary. T.C. says it was because I was so stressed about leaving Clark for the first time. I haven't spent a night away from him since we brought him home. The thought of it did stress me a little...but I didn't feel stressed enough to cause this. Sheesh!! Who knows. Come to find out Clark was GREAT for my parents...very obedient, sweet, a snuggle bunny, etc. YIPPY!! Though he did end up calling several times because he "want talk to Mama." SWEET!!!

Enough about that...Ali and Clark had a great time with Nona and Poppy this weekend. They kept them busy with activities and going out for ice cream, etc. Saturday they went to Space Center Houston and fought the vacation crowd. Today they went to Galveston and rode the ferry, and ate lunch at a restaurant on the water. Sounds fun to me! We so appreciate them coming here to keep the children.

This coming Friday Clark will be evaluated by an ENT to see if there is a medical reason for his nasal speech. We are anxious to see what he says, and anxious to begin speech therapy if there is not a medical reason.

That about sums up our weekend. No pictures to add. I am hoping my parents took some, but I haven't asked.

Then there were 4 again.......

We missed our girl like crazy this week. It was her first time to be away at an overnight camp...and I am proud to say...I survived!! The wimpy mom that I am wasn't too thrilled about it...but I did make it. Ha! As for Ali, she had the most incredible week...and for that I am thankful. She met a lot of new people, experienced camp life, had a great counselor, and learned more about God. It was a wonderful camp. She was able to canoe for the first time, and said it was the highlight of the week. Let me just discuss my laundry issue........for starters....GROSS doesn't even begin to describe it. Seriously! They got grubby, muddy, sweaty.....and then they brought it ALL home. Her tennis shoes were in great shape just a measly week ago...2 pair mind you! I will just say that we will be tennis shoe shopping very soon!! All that said, it was worth it for her to have experienced it all. The cabins had names and hers was "The Truth". Isn't that neat...another was "The Light", etc. She slept almost 12 hours last night, guess she was extremely tired. Every morning they woke up at 7:00 and didn't go to sleep until 11:30 or so at night. The in between hours were very busy with games, Bible study, swimming, canoeing, hiking, water play, and ended with a group devotion before heading to their cabins for much needed showers! I am assuming the kids melted into their beds at night. Oh, they even got to have a cook-out and camped outside one night. A very neat thing that they did after the closing ceremony yesterday is that each cabin huddled together afterwards and ended in prayer. It was a beautiful sight to see!

Ali even turned down a birthday party that she was invited to today. It was a boating party where they were going to go tubing and ride a jet ski. SHE TURNED IT DOWN....she definitely was wiped out. Hey, we didn't have parties like that when we were kids...I wanted to ask if I could go!! Ha! But, me tubing...no that wouldn't be a pretty sight.

T.C. has National Guard duty this whole weekend. The kids and I are going to see the American Girl movie "Kit" that is out. Ali used to read ALL those books when she was younger. I have heard that it is a really cute movie.

Clark had a fun week even though he wasn't too happy that Ali was gone. I tried to keep him busy with friends. Tuesday he had a play date with some little twin girls from church, Wednesday we went with another little friend to "Palm Beach" in Galveston...it is a man made beach with white sand beaches and chlorinated water and all sorts of fun fountains and things for kids, Thursday I took him to see "Wall-E" at the theater and later that day a friend came over to play for a few hours.....and yesterday we were off to pick up Ali. This afternoon, Ali has an end of the year swim party for her summer swim league. Next weekend doesn't slow down with T.C. having to teach at a marriage conference for the National Guard in downtown Houston...and I will be joining him. My parents will be coming to keep the children. Summers sure can get busy......but we are having fun!

On a different note..........this time one year ago today, we were seeing a picture of our sweet son for the very first time! One year ago today we had our appointment at the adoption center in Kyiv or also spelled Kiev, Ukraine. We would hold him for the first time the very next day on July 13, 2007! What a wonderful gift God chose to lavish upon us. We are forever thankful. As I sit here typing, I hear him downstairs playing with a pile of toys and know his life has forever changed. He has come so far since coming home a year ago. Not to say we don't have rough days, we do, but we know he has come a very long way. He loves life, loves to play, loves construction equipment (oh how he loves this!!!), tractors, cars, trucks, and motorcycles! This boy also LOVES to eat. Ha! He is 3 inches taller and 3 lbs. heavier. Samuel Ruslan Clark.......we love him so very much!

I am off to wash more laundry...wish me luck!

Happy Late 4th of July!!!

Hope everyone had a fun 4th of July. Ours was interesting, to say the least. We had fun plans to have a picnic lunch at a park with some friends. So...we get to the park (were very excited we found a picnic table under a covered awning to get out of the sun)... unload the vehicles...get children settled with their lunches...start eating....and low and behold it started raining. We finished up our lunch, and the kids run off to play on the playground before the downpour started. We ran to the cars...load kids...and head home. BUMMER! Later that evening, we called our friends and we all decided to go out for the traditional 4th of July pizza buffet. Ha! The rained stopped and we sat at our friends for a couple of hours just chatting while all the kids just played...then we had watermelon! YUMMY! Pretty much all 5 kids were covered in watermelon juice by the time they were finished. All in all we had a fun day despite the rain! It was Clark's first 4th of July as an American.

We had a fun outing today. We headed over to Brazos Bend State Park (you can check it out at http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/parks/brazos_bend/ We went on a hiking trail and saw over 20 alligators. We actually lost track of how many gators we found. It was really neat...we started trying to see who could spot them first. Clark decided to grab some poison ivy, so we will see if he breaks out. Ali is extremely allergic, so we tried to make sure he didn't touch her before we could scrub him off. That is all she needs at camp this coming week...to break out with poison ivy. YUCK!

Speaking of camp...Ali is all packed and ready to go! She is just so excited. We will leave after church tomorrow to take her. We were told by some friends that if we get there early she can pick what bunk she wants. She will want to bunk by her 2 friends that are going.

I will leave you with some pictures from our week.

One camp down...one more to go!

Ali returned home this weekend, quite spoiled I might add, from her grandparents house. She had such a great time at music camp last week, and very much enjoyed spending some time with her Nona! I don't use the word "spoiled" lightly. Let's see, Nona took she and Sierra out to dinner, out for ice cream, skating, and to the park. Abby joined them on a few of those outings, which was fun for them. Clark and I joined them in Lake Charles on Wednesday. One night we took them to play at Chuck E. Cheese. It was Clark's first time there...and he absolutely loved it. About music camp...there are a few pictures from the musical they performed on Sunday morning. Ali was in the set design class...so the picture of the poster is one that she made. She won a little award at camp for being creative.

While Ali was away, T.C. and I took Clark to a place called Jumpin' Jungle. It was a place with all types of inflatable bouncy things. OH MY GOODNESS...he had the best time. After bouncing for a solid hour, he was pretty pooped....oh, and so was Clark. Ha!!

Ali swam in the Reserve Meet on Saturday. She did well, and was glad she swam so well in the summer league. (not that we are heading to the Olympics or anything..ha!)

We take Ali to her second camp on Sunday afternoon. This will be her first "real" camp. (overnight) She will be there from Sunday late afternoon through noon on Friday. She is so excited. I just hope she can keep all of her stuff together and make it home with everything. (she isn't known for her super organizational skills..haha) I hope I can get everything crammed into one bag (towels, toiletries, shoes, clothes, beach towel, sunscreen, etc.). There is quite the packing list. They even have to take a pair of jeans and long sleeve shirt...ok people, we are in TEXAS! What were they thinking when they wrote that list? Ugh! I guess it is for the night they go camping to help with mosquitoes maybe? I am going to pack each days clothes in individual giant Ziplocs. Ali also isn't known for her fashion sense. I know she is 11, and most girls her age LOVE fashion....but Ali...not so much. She probably won't be so thrilled with this prospect.

It has been so interesting lately...several families have contacted us regarding adopting from Ukraine. We gave our agency permission to use us as contacts in their Ukraine program. It has been so fun retelling our story and thankful other children will have a family. It makes me very happy...but a little amazed that we have been home almost a whole year now. That is crazy! This time last year we were frantically preparing for our trip of a lifetime! I have also been corresponding with another family that adopted from the same orphanage that Clark was in. They adopted a beautiful little girl back in February. It has been fun seeing their pictures with the same children in them.

I felt like Superwoman today......I grocery shopped with 4 children. Yes, 4...and did quite well actually. Ok, so I forgot a few items...what's new? I was babysitting today and we were in desperate need of groceries...so what's a gal to do...drag them all along! Ha!

Here are some pictures from our week...

Going crazy around here......

Ok, so it is too quiet around here this week. Ali and her best friend, Sierra, are in Louisiana attending a music camp that my brother is leading at their church. They are staying with my mom (as my dad is out of town this week). They are having a great time...however, I sure miss her. Clark and I will be going over on Wednesday and bring the clan home on Friday afternoon. She will go to swim practice Friday evening, attend a swim meet on Saturday, we will leave bright and early Sunday morning to head BACK to Louisiana so the girls can participate in the musical that they are learning this week (they learn a musical at camp and present it during morning worship), then rush back here so that Ali can play her guitar in a recital Sunday afternoon. Wowzers!! As you can see, it will be one crazy weekend.

We have been having some fun the last week. I started watching Sierra and her brother, Jacob, last week. I will watch them off and on throughout the summer. One day I took them to Space Center Houston (our kids LOVE that place...obviously!) and they had a blast. I had to just about drag them out of there.

Ali had her last summer league swim meet this past Saturday. The only thing left is a special meet on Saturday. She made a certain time on her events and it qualified her for this meet. (lucky us...hahaha...just kidding...she was proud of herself) So after Saturday the summer league is officially over...minus a pool party in July. She will be back to just her year around team. She will get 3 weeks off for a summer break in August which will be very nice. What will we do not going to the pool just about every night? It will definitely be strange.

Clark......OH CLARK....he has been a little tart for the past week or so. Tart is putting it nicely. I don't know what has gotten into that little guy. We are having to buckle down and be extremely consistent with consequences. He really fights us. He is either super sweet/compliant/easy going.......OR......strong willed/irritable/fighting our authority, etc. It is exhausting! However, I know we will overcome this. He truly has a very sweet nature and we DO love him dearly. He is just wiping his poor Mama out. Ha!!

So what good books are you guys reading these days? I am horrible at trying to get through like 3 books at one time.....never quite finishing any of them! Anyone else like that? Right now I am usually reading some type of parenting book. I am trying to get through Bringing Up Boys, The Strong Willed Child (both of those are by Dr. James Dobson), and What's So Amazing About Grace by Philip Yancey. Bringing Up Boys has been so helpful in understanding boys...they are OH SO DIFFERENT than girls. What's So Amazing About Grace is fabulous. We are going through it during the Sunday School hour at church. It is so convicting in its teaching of God's grace. I love a quote by C.S. Lewis that is included in the book "To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable because God forgives the inexcusable in you." If that isn't convicting, I don't know what is. In the book Yancey makes a statement, "Grace alone melts ungrace." I just love that. How often do we harbor resentment and hostility towards someone when we should be showing grace because of the grace Christ offers to us. I am so glad that I decided to take the study and read this book.

Oh, the cutest Clark story. This past weekend we had a storm pass through and T.C. spotted a double rainbow outside afterwards. He called for us all to go outside and check it out. As we were turning around to come inside Clark adds, "Noah did it." We were shocked that he put that together. Ok, so he wasn't exactly right...but close enough! That was awesome.

So where are the comments blog friends? What are you guys doing this summer...please share!!

Oh, I will clarify about the picture with Clark and the gator...it is fake. Since the summer swim team are the "Gators"...they have this fake gator at the pool. However, after looking at the picture it looked like I plopped our son right down by a gator. Ummmm, NO NO NO!!
